A Live-in Carer’s Typical Day

Every placement is different but in general a typical carer’s work day would be something like this:

9:00 to 11:00 am: Knock on client’s bedroom door and wish them a good morning. Then the carer would help the client get up, get dressed and prepare and serve breakfast. And then tidy up after breakfast.

Then the carer takes a break until 12:30.

12:30 to 2:30: Carer prepares and serves lunch and tidies up afterwards and does some laundry.

Then the carer takes a break until 4:30.

4:30 to 5:30 The carer takes the client for a walk or plays scrabble or listens to music with the client.

Then 5:30 to 6:30 Carer takes a break again.

6:30 to 7:30 The carer prepares and serves evening meal.

Then 7:30 to 9:00 Carer takes a break until 9:00.

9:00 to 10:00 Carer helps client get ready for bed.

Carer finishes work at 10 pm.

It is important that you give your carer a work timetable/schedule so that she knows what you want her to do and when you want her to do each task. Let your carer know when the HSE carers usually come in because this is a good time for your carer to take her break.

Your carer should fill in a timesheet every week with the hours she did and what duties she performed. She should give this to you and you should forward this to the person who prepares the carer’s payslip. You should keep a copy of every week’s timesheet for your own records.
